NFL free agency has finally arrived. As of today, teams like the Kansas City Chiefs can begin negotiating contracts with any player without a contract for next season. To no surprise, the Chiefs got to work early, addressing their biggest need on Day One in free agency.

After witnessing Patrick Mahomes suffer a career-high six sacks in the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss, the front office had no choice but to find offensive line reinforcements. The biggest question mark was at left tackle, where now-traded Joe Thuney was playing by the end of the year instead of his more natural position as a left guard.

Well, now the Chiefs won’t have to force a player to change positions mid-season because they’ve signed a new left tackle at the outset of free agency.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Chiefs are signing former San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million contract, with up to $21.24 million in guaranteed money.

Moore, 27, was a fifth-round selection by the 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s appeared in 55 games but made just 12 starts. Now, he’s averaging $15 million per season, which projects him as an above-average starter. Based on his contract, Moore is now the projected starting left tackle in Kansas City, where he’ll be tasked with keeping Mahomes clean in the pocket.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Commanders and New England Patriots are among the teams in the market for offensive line help heading into NFL free agency. With Trey Smith and Ronnie Stanley off the board, clubs are turning their focus to another veteran option poised to hit the open market.

Kansas City prevented Smith from hitting free agency, applying the franchise tag to him which he signed on Sunday. However, it forced the club to trade All-Pro guard Joe Thuney and there’s still a glaring need at offensive tackle. Meanwhile, the Patriots, Commanders and Cincinnati Bengals are also looking for help at both offensive tackle and guard

There are plenty of options available at both spots. At offensive tackle, Cam Robinson is the best option with quality starters like Patrick Mekari, Dan Moore Jr., Tyron Smith and Jedrick Willis behind him. At guard, Will Fries is the best player available with Teven Jenkins, Mekhi Becton and Kevin Zeitler close behind. However, a veteran option has popped up in NFL rumors as a veteran option.

According to The Athletic‘s senior NFL reporter Dianna Russini, the Chiefs, Commanders, Patriots and Bengals have all shown interest in signing offensive tackle Morgan Moses

Moses, age 34, spent last season with the New York Jets. The 6-foot-6 offensive tackle started 14 games at right tackle, rating as one of the best pass protectors at his position. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed just 2 sacks and 16 total pressures in 467 pass-blocking snaps last season. He’s also been a very good run blocker before the 2024 campaign.

Related: Most underrated NFL free agents

New York also wants to re-sign Moses, but the number of suitors involved might complicate matters. If he wants to compete for a championship, the Chiefs, Bengals and Commanders all offer a more viable path to the Super Bowl. If he’s looking for the biggest payday possible, Washington and New England have the most cap space in the NFL.

Moses has spent his entire career at right tackle and would fill an obvious need for the Patriots, Bengals, Commanders, Patriots and Jets. Kansas City is a more interesting destination. Jawaan Taylor is currently the team’s right tackle, but he’s largely been a liability. While he could be benched in favor of Moses, that would mean carrying a $27.391 million cap hit on a player to serve as a reserve next season. It would still be an upgrade for the Chiefs offensive line, but it would come with a hefty cost.

NFL rumors: Kansas City Chiefs looking to poach Pro Bowler from Baltimore Ravens in NFL free agency https://sportsnaut.com/kansas-city-chiefs-rumors-ronnie-stanley-speculation/ Fri, 07 Mar 2025 17:54:11 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1278524 kansas city chiefs

After trading Joe Thuney this week, a new rumor claims the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to bolster their offensive line with a Pro Bowler from a top AFC rival.

The Kansas City Chiefs were on the verge of making NFL history in February. While there have been many iconic dynasties in the league’s history, none of them, not even the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys, won three straight Super Bowls.

However, despite their best salary cap massaging to put together another championship roster, the Chiefs fell to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. Now, the check has come due and Kansas City must make some tough financial decisions. One came this week when they surprisingly traded offensive line anchor Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears.

Moving the three-time Pro Bowler has left a massive void in the KC offensive front. However, a new report this week claims the team plans to improve the O-line with a top player available this month in free agency.

“The word is that the Chiefs, whose offensive line was exposed in their blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, will target Ronnie Stanley in free agency to protect Patrick Mahomes’ blind side,” the Baltimore Ravens website reported this week.

The offensive tackle is ranked among the top three free agents available this offseason, including on NFL.com. The 30-year-old was the sixth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. And has been a starter for Baltimore throughout his nine-year career. However, injuries have been a constant problem for the NFL veteran.

Nevertheless, he earned Pro Bowl honors for the second time in 2024. As he had a fantastic season guarding Lamar Jackson’s blindside. The combo of Stanley and Jawaan Taylor guarding the edges for the Chiefs offense could be dynamite for the team in 2025 and beyond.

Seahawks’ huge DK Metcalf trade asking price for potential suitors like Raiders, Patriots, Chargers and Chiefs revealed https://sportsnaut.com/nfl-rumors-current-dk-metcalf-trade-asking-price-for-raiders-chiefs-patriots/ Thu, 06 Mar 2025 14:21:56 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1278161 dk metcalf

A new rumor has revealed what it would take teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, and New England Patriots to complete a blockbuster DK Metcalf trade this offseason.

With the Super Bowl now in the distance, the NFL offseason is really starting to heat up. The 2025 NFL Draft is just a month away and NFL free agency starts next week. However, the trade market is setting up to be a busy part of the spring for many franchises around the league.

Related: 10 DK Metcalf landing spots after Seattle Seahawks trade request

Last week, Los Angeles Rams star Matthew Stafford was in serious discussions about a potential trade. Multi-time Pro Bowler Jonathan Allen is up for grabs, and another huge name was added to trade rumors this week when it was reported Seattle Seahawks great DK Metcalf requested a trade out of town. The two-time Pro Bowler is in search of a new contract that the team is not interested in giving him.

Since the news broke, a plethora of franchises have been linked to the gifted receiver as a potential landing spot. But how much will it cost interested teams to get a deal done? Well, on Thursday, The Athletic NFL insider Dianna Russini shed some light on the current price to complete a DK Metcalf trade this offseason.

Seattle Seahawks looking for a first round pick in DK Metcalf trade

“The Seahawks are seeking a first and third-round pick for WR DK Metcalf, per sources,” Russini revealed in a post on X. That is a sizable asking price for a very good, but not great receiver.

In comparison, the Kansas City Chiefs received five draft picks, but only one in the first round when they moved Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins in 2022. He was already a seven-time Pro Bowler and, arguably, the game’s best receiver at that time.

The same year, the Green Bay Packers received two picks, one in the first round, when they traded Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders. He was a six-time Pro Bowler at that point, and also in the discussion as the game’s best pass catcher.

Negotiations always start high. But the Seattle Seahawks will need to bring that price down if they want the Las Vegas Raiders, New England Patriots, and other likely suitors to make a real effort to complete a deal. Especially since Russini added that DK Metcalf “is also eyeing a new contract worth around $30M per year.”

  • DK Metcalf stats (2024): 66 catches, 992 receiving yards, 5 touchdowns, 15.0 yards per catch.

New York Giants and Jets should have went hard for Pro Bowler the Kansas City Chiefs just traded https://sportsnaut.com/nfl-rumors-new-york-giants-and-jets-should-target-joe-thuney-trade/ Wed, 05 Mar 2025 14:51:50 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1277870 new york giants

The New York Giants and New York Jets will have new starting quarterbacks in 2025. Whether that be a rookie or a veteran QB, both teams should have made a full court press to land an elite lineman that was traded on Wednesday.

This will be an important next few months for the Giants and Jets. New York City’s professional football teams had disastrous seasons in 2024 as the pair of franchises won a combined eight games this past season. If either franchise hopes to get back to relevancy in 2025, they need to make some big impactful additions this offseason.

Related: Three elite wide receivers New York Giants should target in free agency to pair with Malik Nabers

Along with having terrible records the last two seasons, the Jets and Giants have something else in common. A major problem at QB. The G-Men gave up on former first-round pick Daniel Jones during the season after more mediocre play. While Gang Green informed NFL legend Aaron Rodgers that their new regime will not require his services next season.

The teams will have a new starting quarterback in 2025 and it could be a rookie. While they both have very nice weapons on offense, it won’t matter if they don’t get the time to make plays. That is why the Giants and Jets should have jumped hard into the chase for a three-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman that was just on the trade block.

Should the New York Giants or Jets have traded for Joe Thuney?

“The Kansas City Chiefs are engaged in trade discussions surrounding 4x Super Bowl champion Joe Thuney,” The Athletic NFL insider Dianna Russini reported on Wednesday.

While tackles get a lot of the focus on the offensive line, a great guard can be extremely helpful for an offensive line. Especially if they hope to make plays in the run game. The two-time first team All-Pro has been a part of some elite dynasties with the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs. However, he is in the midst of a career peak at 32, and after earning Pro Bowl honors for a third straight season in 2024.

  • Joe Thuney contract: Five years, $80 million

After the original report, it was revealed that a deal was already completed and the three-time Pro Bowler is headed to the Chicago Bears for a fourth round pick next year.

It was a missed opportunity for both the New York Giants and Jets. For whoever is under center in 2025, the gifted guard could have made a massive difference on and off the field for a pair of teams that need both on the O-line next season.

The Kansas City Chiefs began their offseason by preventing one of the most highly-coveted players from NFL free agency, placing the franchise tag on Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith. While that moves significantly eats into the Chiefs cap space in 2025, some around the league believe an even bigger move could be coming.

Kansas City devoted $23.402 million of its cap space to Smith with the franchise tag. While the club could lower that number with a contract extension, a deal isn’t imminent and the front office has to move forward as if that cap flexibility is gone.

The team could have gained some salary-cap relief if Travis Kelce retired, but the future Hall of Famer will be returning for the 2025 NFL season. There are other avenues to create cap room and Kansas City will need to make that happen to land a top free agent they’re being linked to by other teams this offseason.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Chiefs are a potential sleeper for All-Pro offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley. Many people inside the league are “loosely expecting” Kansas City to entertain a pursuit of the standout left tackle if he doesn’t sign a new contract with the Baltimore Ravens.

Stanley, who turns 31 later this month, had a rebound season in 2024. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection since 2019, starting all 17 games and playing over 1,000 snaps for the first time since 2018. The standout left tackle is a standout in pass protection, a glaring area of need for Kansas City.

The Chiefs’ problem is the bidding war for his services. Baltimore wants him back and the New England Patriots, who have more than $120 million in cap space, are in the market for a left tackle. There’s also a belief that the Ravens might sign Stanley to an extension “in the coming days” which could force Kansas City to pivot to Cam Robinson.

NFL rumors: Insider predicts Kansas City Chiefs will acquire four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver to help Patrick Mahomes https://sportsnaut.com/kansas-city-chiefs-rumors-nfl-insider-predicts-stefon-diggs-signing/ Sat, 01 Mar 2025 01:06:15 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1276971 Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

Despite making their third straight Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs need to desperately upgrade their offense ahead of the 2025 season.

The Chiefs finished 17th in average yards per game (327.6), 17th in points per game (22.6), and 14th in passing yards per game (222.4). The Chiefs didn’t have any 1,000-yard receivers, with the closest being tight end Travis Kelce at 823. Xavier Worthy had the most receiving yards among wide receivers at 638. And including the playoffs, the Chiefs only scored at least 30 points three times.

On top of improving the offensive line after Patrick Mahomes was sacked 36 times — the most in his career — the Chiefs need to find a legit playmaker.

That’s why one NFL insider predicts the Chiefs will sign a four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver to help Mahomes.

NFL insider: Kansas City Chiefs will add Stefon Diggs in offseason

ESPN’s Aaron Schatz believes the Chiefs will sign wide receiver Stefon Diggs to give Mahomes and the offense a playmaker they badly need.

Coming over from the Buffalo Bills, Diggs ended up playing just eight games for the Houston Texans in 2024 after suffering a torn ACL. However, before that, he had six straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons.

“With a number of free agent wide receivers ready to depart, the Chiefs need a veteran who can play on the outside opposite Xavier Worthy after Rashee Rice returns to the slot. Diggs should be recovered for the start of the 2025 season after suffering a torn ACL in Week 8. He had a positive DVOA for the Texans before his injury and was on pace for another 1,000-yard season,” Schatz wrote.

Five wide receivers are free agents — DeAndre Hopkins, Justin Watson, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, and Mecole Hardman — so the Chiefs will need to remake their receiving corps. Adding Diggs would make a good start.

Over 10 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Bills, and Texans, Diggs has 857 receptions for 10,491 receiving yards and 70 touchdowns. He was named All-Pro in 2020.

Super Bowl-winning head coach supports Philadelphia Eagles’ ‘Tush Push’ amid ban proposal https://sportsnaut.com/philadelphia-eagles-news-kansas-city-chiefs-andy-reid-supports-tush-push/ Wed, 26 Feb 2025 01:55:51 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1276295 Philadelphia Eagles Tush Push

The Philadelphia Eagles’ incredibly successful “Tush Push” play, also known as the “Brotherly Shove,” is making headlines once again.

The Green Bay Packers recently made a proposal to the NFL to ban the play, which is predominantly used by the Eagles in short-yardage situations. Other teams have their own versions but aren’t nearly as successful.

The play has been previously studied by the league, but no action has been taken.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni says it would be “unfair” to ban the play.

“I can’t tell you how many times we’ve practiced the snap, we’ve practiced the play — it’s not a play that’s easy to practice, so there’s different ways we’ve figured out how to practice it — the complements that come off of it that can create explosive plays,” Sirianni said, via ESPN.com.

“The fact that it’s [portrayed] as an automatic thing, we work really hard, and our guys are talented at this play, and so it’s a little insulting to say we’re good at it so it’s automatic. We work really hard at it.”

Sirianni is also getting support from the head coach he just defeated in Super Bowl 59.

In an interview with Pro Football Talk, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who was on the other side of a Jalen Hurts “Brotherly Shove” TD, backed the play.

“They do it better than anybody, so they’re gonna get criticized,” Reid said. “Heck, if we could do it effectively, I’d probably do it.”

Reid also brought up what former Eagles center Jason Kelce said about running the play when he called it “grueling.”

“That’s how I feel, but these committees take care of all this injury stuff,” Reid added. “You hear Jason Kelce coming out — he said it when he was playing, he said it when he’s retired. And I got a lot of trust in that kid, he’s tougher than shoe leather. He’s out there going, ‘this is a great play, but it kills me. As a center, I was getting destroyed.’ . . . That in itself is an alarm that you gotta look at.”

It’s highly unlikely the “Tush Push” would get banned. If the proposal goes to a vote, 24 of the 32 owners would need to approve to ban it.

In 2024, Hurts had 14 rushing touchdowns, with 13 of them coming in goal-to-go downs. The Eagles also had the fourth-best fourth-down conversion rate in the league at 70.4%.

After an ugly loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, the upcoming Kansas City Chiefs offseason could be one of the most pivotal in the franchise’s recent history. As the club awaits a decision from Travis Kelce on retirement, another Pro Bowl starter faces an uncertain future.

Trey Smith, age 25, earned his first Pro Bowl selection this past season. Selected with the 226th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Smith cemented himself as one of the best guards in the NFL this past season. It came at the perfect time, in a contract year with a chance to earn a lucrative deal on the open market.

Kansas City wants him back, especially given its intentions to move All-Pro offensive lineman Joe Thuney back to left guard in 2025. Re-signing Smith and kicking Thuney inside back to his natural position would create one of the best interior lines in the NFL.

However, NFL rumors for over a month have pointed toward a departure. Smith is the best offensive lineman available in NFL free agency with teams like the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Chargers and Tennessee Titans all in the market for a Pro Bowl guard. Many around the league have viewed it as a foregone conclusion that Smith would leave Kansas City, but that might no longer be the case.

Related: NFL execs predict 2 big Kansas City Chiefs offseason moves

Dianna Russini of The Athletic wrote that while she previously thought the Chiefs front office would let Smith walk, she now expects a “strong push” from the organization to retain him.

Doing so would come at a hefty price. Current NFL contract projections for Smith have him making north of $20 million per season, becoming the highest-paid guard in NFL history. If that’s the case, Kansas City would have more invested in its interior offensive line than any other club by a significant margin.

Related: Kansas City Chiefs set deadline for Travis Kelce retirement decision

However, the club also saw the importance of protecting Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl. It’s why every effort will be made to re-sign Smith, keeping the core of the Chiefs offensive line together. If Kansas City falls short in its efforts to re-sign the Pro Bowl guard, it will likely pursue a veteran left tackle in free agency.

NFL rumors: Insider boldly proposes Kansas City Chiefs cut multiple-time All-Pro to gain cap space https://sportsnaut.com/kansas-city-chiefs-rumor-nfl-insider-cut-travis-kelce-cap-space/ Fri, 21 Feb 2025 22:55:19 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1275487 Kansas City CHiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs, fresh off their failed Super Bowl three-peat bid against the Philadelphia Eagles, face critical roster decisions this offseason amid mounting salary cap pressure.

With just $7.9 million in cap space available for 2025 – even after the NFL’s announced cap increase to between $277.5 and $281.5 million – the Chiefs must either shed salary or restructure existing contracts, particularly Patrick Mahomes’, to upgrade their championship-caliber roster. Primary needs include strengthening the offensive line and adding playmakers around Mahomes.

NFL insider believes Kansas City Chiefs need to say goodbye to future Hall of Famer

ESPN NFL insider Aaron Schatz has proposed a controversial solution: cutting future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce.

“This would be a very unpopular move, but Kelce’s contract is set up as an easy way for the Chiefs to gain cap space for 2025,” Schatz wrote. “According to Roster Management System, cutting Kelce would cost the Chiefs only $2.5 million in dead money while saving them over $17 million on the salary cap. That’s important with the Chiefs currently having negative effective cap space (i.e. the cap space that they would have after signing at least 51 players and a projected rookie class).”

The suggestion comes after Kelce’s challenging 2024 season. Despite earning his 10th Pro Bowl selection, the 35-year-old posted career lows in several categories: three touchdowns, 823 receiving yards, and 8.5 yards per catch – his worst numbers since his 2013 rookie season when he played just one game.

Schatz also pointed to concerning metrics beyond the basic statistics.

“While Kelce still had some important catches in the postseason, his regular-season performance collapsed in 2024. Kelce ranked 38th out of 49 qualifying tight ends in receiving DVOA, and he ranked dead last among tight ends in the ESPN receiver tracking metrics.”

While Kelce has hinted at retirement, he’s indicated he’ll take time to make his decision. Though releasing a franchise legend would be unprecedented, it wouldn’t be the first time an NFL team has moved on from a future Hall of Famer for salary cap relief.

Regardless of the Kelce decision, one thing remains clear: the Chiefs must improve their offensive line protection and add offensive weapons if they hope to return to the Super Bowl in 2025.
