The Cleveland Browns and New York Giants are still trying to formulate their quarterback plans for the 2025 season. Right now, the Browns’ presumed starter is former first-round pick Kenny Pickett, who they traded for earlier this week.

As for the Giants, it’s wide open, but former undrafted free agent Tommy DeVito is the leading candidate by default. Neither options are ideal and now both franchises are considering other options, including a former Super Bowl winner.

With the start of the new NFL year kicking off earlier today, the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants aren’t wasting any time.

According to The Athletic’s NFL insider Dianna Russini, the Browns and Giants are set to host 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson for a visit later this week. Wilson will visit the Browns first, on Thursday, before taking a trip to New York for the Giants’ visit on Friday.

The 36-year-old Wilson is coming off a 6-5 season with the Steelers in which he led them to the playoffs and a quick elimination in the Wild Card round. Yet, while Pittsburgh is seemingly open to bringing the former Super Bowl winner back to town, they’re currently waiting to hear back from four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers.

Wilson doesn’t need to go on a visit to Pittsburgh to know what they offer, but taking a trip to Cleveland and New York not only provides leverage during contract negotiations, but it gives him a chance to see what else is out there.

New York Giants insider floats horrifying backup plan idea if they can’t sign Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson https://sportsnaut.com/new-york-giants-news-joe-flacco-speculation-in-free-agency/ Wed, 12 Mar 2025 18:36:53 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1279995 new york giants

A New York Giants insider offered up a horrifying idea as a backup option if the team can’t sign future Hall-of-Famers Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson in free agency this month.

It has been a very busy last few days for the Giants. General manager Joe Schoen entered the offseason feeling a lot of pressure to improve the roster in a big way after a pair of disappointing seasons. And thus far, the team is receiving positive reviews for the slew of signings they have made this week.

Not only did they re-sign veteran receiver Darius Slayton, but they improved the secondary by luring Paulson Adebo away from the New Orleans Saints, and Jevon Holland from the Miami Dolphins with a couple of big money contracts. However, they have yet to address their biggest need: Quarterback.

They have been linked to NFL legends Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson in recent weeks. However, they are not the only franchises pursuing the two veterans. There is a very real chance the Giants fall short in their chase. Considering that, New York Post Giants insider Paul Schwartz offered up a backup option in NFL free agency. And it will not thrill G-Men fans.

With far better teams like the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers interested in Rodgers and Wilson, Schwartz suggested that 17-year veteran Joe Flacco would be on New York’s radar as a backup option.

Would the former Baltimore Ravens star be better than Daniel Jones in 2025? Probably, but not by a lot. Giants fans are hoping for a team that can compete for a playoff spot next season. It seems like they would have a better chance to do that with Rodgers or Wilson. Not a 40-year-old journeyman or a rookie, he is mentoring.

  • Joe Flacco stats (2024): 1,761 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 90.5 passer rating

Flacco was solid to good during stints with the Colts and Browns the last two seasons. He put together a 6-5 record in his starts the last two years with those teams.

An update from a notable New York Giants insider details the quarterbacks the team is currently targeting and which they prefer most.

It has been a very busy last few days for the New York Giants. General manager Joe Schoen entered the offseason feeling a lot of pressure to improve the roster in a big way after a pair of disappointing seasons. And thus far, the team is receiving positive reviews for the slew of signings they have made this week.

The team has been linked to various players in recent weeks. But with many of the best options off the free agent and trade markets, the Giants’ options are limited. On Tuesday, SNY NFL insider Connor Hughes offered an update on who the team is pursuing and the order of priority.

“The Giants very clearly need their passer still. They remain committed to Aaron Rodgers, if they convince him to come to New York over Pittsburgh or Minnesota,” Hughes wrote. “They have Russell Wilson as a fallback. That’s fine. The two are veterans who are better than what the team had a year ago. Neither is the long-term answer, though – another demand of Mara’s was to find that franchise quarterback.”

When it comes to a potential long-term answer at QB, Hughes revealed that “Most expect the Giants to be aggressive” in the NFL Draft to get Miami Hurricanes star Cam Ward. The signal caller is viewed as the best in this year’s class. However, there are also notable red flags in his game.

After two disappointing seasons with the New York Jets, Aaron Rodgers will soon have to find a new team if he wants to be a starting quarterback in 2025. He’s running out of options, and as the days go by, teams will run out of patience, leading to contract agreements with other quarterbacks.

Yet Rodgers, whose options may be limited to the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants, may not care.

Aaron Rodgers’ free agency decision could take weeks

Teams and players typically operate with a high sense of urgency when NFL free agency gets underway. Not Aaron Rodgers. While he’s never been a free agent before (and technically still isn’t until the Jets release him), Rodgers’ free agency market has been slow to develop.

According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette‘s Gerry Dulac, the Steelers are negotiating with Rodgers, but he may not sign today, or even in the next few days.

In fact, ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes that Rodgers is once again operating on his own schedule and that it could “be a little while’ before making a decision.

“He does things on his schedule, when he’s ready. And my understanding is this could be a little while. Now I don’t know if a little while is a day or a week, but my understanding is this could be a little while before he makes a decision about what he wants.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Aaron Rodgers

Meanwhile, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport passes along that “it’s either gonna be the Steelers or Giants” for Rodgers.

The Steelers just upgraded their receiving corps, forming a potent duo with DK Metcalf and George Pickens leading the way. Meanwhile, the Giants found their No. 1 WR last offseason by selecting Malik Nabers. Pittsburgh is coming off a postseason appearance and the Giants had just three wins in 2024.

Which situation will Rodgers prefer? It could be a matter of weeks before we find out.

It’s just Day 2 of the NFL’s free agency tampering period, but several dominoes have already fallen, including in the quarterback world. That puts the New York Giants on even shakier ground since Tommy DeVito is the only QB under contract in New York.

Not to mention, head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are entering their fourth year in control of the Giants’ franchise. They’ve gone 18-31-1 in that span, and coming off a three-win season surely places both on the hot seat entering 2025, meaning the Giants need as many wins as possible.

This is why the Giants must find an above-average starting QB this offseason, and there aren’t many options left. Yet, they are reportedly still in on arguably the best QB available in NFL free agency.

New York Giants trying to sweet-talk Aaron Rodgers

The New York Giants have the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, which could be used to target a quarterback. Of course, they could also attempt a trade into the No. 1 spot. But unless or until they can put themselves in a position to guarantee a top QB prospect will fall into their laps, the Giants need to have a capable starter.

That leads us back to the Aaron Rodgers conversation because the four-time NFL MVP wants to reportedly play two more seasons as Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio explains. Like the Giants, Rodgers is running out of options if he wants to assure himself a starting job for 2025 too.

Teams who don’t have a defined starter include the Giants, Tennessee Titans (who have the No. 1 pick and could draft Cam Ward), Cleveland Browns, and Minnesota Vikings (who likely prefer to hand the keys to J.J. McCarthy.

Basically, Rodgers is getting down to the nitty gritty, and he has nearly no choice but to listen to the Giants’ free agency pitch.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Giants have had “great conversations” with Rodgers this offseason.

“The Giants have had great conversations with Aaron Rodgers. Part of it is that, we think that you and Malik Nabers are really going to vibe. This is a guy that has incredible football IQ. We know you ask a lot of your wide receivers and this is a guy that can handle it. Those conversations will continue.”

Mike Garafolo on New York Giants’ pitch to Aaron Rodgers

With a strong sense of urgency to win and win now, the 41-year-old Rodgers could like what he’s hearing from the Giants’ front office. But is there another team, like the Steelers, on Rodgers’ radar? It shouldn’t be long before we get an answer to one of the biggest remaining questions of free agency.

NFL rumors reveal how much long Aaron Rodgers might play amid decision between Steelers, Giants https://sportsnaut.com/nfl-rumors-aaron-rodgers-steelers-giants/ Tue, 11 Mar 2025 14:59:12 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1279517 NFL rumors, Aaron Rodgers

The New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers are competing for quarterback Aaron Rodgers in NFL free agency, hopeful the future Hall of Famer can uplift their offense in 2025. Amid plenty of NFL rumors on which team Rodgers will sign with, there’s now some insight into his long-term future.

Rodgers, age 41, showed signs of improvement late last season with the New York Jets as he got further removed from Achilles surgery. The late-season stretch provided some teams around the league with confidence that the four-time NFL MVP could still be a quality starter.

  • Aaron Rodgers stats 2024 (ESPN): 3,897 passing yards, 28-11 TD-INT, 63% completion rate, 6.7 ypa, 90.5 QB rating, 40 sacks taken

However, it was unknown whether or not Rodgers wanted to keep playing football. He answered that quickly by campaigning for the Jets to bring him back next season, but the team moved on from him. Now, the 10-time Pro Bowl selection is weighing opportunities with the Steelers and Giants. Amid speculation over which team he picks, there’s another interesting wrinkle to consider.

Appearing on ESPN’s Get Up, senior NFL reporter Dan Graziano shared that there’s a “perception” around the league that Rodgers wants to play two more years.

  • Aaron Rodgers career stats: 102.6 QB rating, 62,952 passing yards, 503-116 TD-INT, 153-87-1 record, 7.6 ypa, 65.1% completion rate

That timeline might not necessarily align with what the Giants want, given the persistent NFL rumors that the team would like to trade up for the first overall pick to draft Cam Ward. Even if New York doesn’t draft a quarterback in Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft, it will likely be taking one early in 2026.

Pittsburgh could be more receptive to Rodgers playing two more seasons. Mike Tomlin remains one of the best coaches in the NFL and DK Metcalf just signed a five-year contract extension. Rodgers could potentially be the Steelers quarterback for the next two seasons, giving the franchise two chances at contention. If the team falls short of its Super Bowl aspirations after that, the organization could do a full reset and move on from both Rodgers and Tomlin.

Daniel Jones reportedly choosing between these 2 teams in NFL free agency https://sportsnaut.com/nfl-rumors-daniel-jones-news-colts-vikings/ Tue, 11 Mar 2025 14:37:47 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1279508 Daniel Jones

NFL free agency kicked off on Monday with many of the top quarterbacks, including Justin Fields and Sam Darnold, coming off the board. While Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers are still available, the latest NFL rumors indicate Daniel Jones could be the next to land a contract.

Jones, the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, was released by the New York Giants in November. He quickly latched on with the Minnesota Vikings, learning head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system and eventually becoming Sam Darnold’s backup. However, he never saw the field in Minnesota.

Related: NFL free agency predictions for Day 2 of tampering period

  • Daniel Jones stats (ESPN): 2,070 passing yards, 8-7 TD-INT, 63.3% completion rate, 79.4 QB rating

Despite not taking a snap as the Vikings’ quarterback, Jones entered NFL free agency with a solid market of suitors. With the New York Jets (Fields) and Seattle Seahawks (Darnold) filling their quarterback vacancies, it appears Jones is now deciding between two teams.

According to ESPN‘s Stephen Holder, Jones is deciding between contact offers from the Vikings and the Indianapolis Colts. While the terms of the proposals from the clubs haven’t been disclosed, Minnesota and Indianapolis are believed to be offering similar opportunities in 2025.

Related: Worst moves from NFL free agency tampering period

  • Daniel Jones career stats: 24-44-1 record, 64.1% completion rate, 70-47 TD-INT, 74.3 QB rating, 14,582 passing yards, 2,179 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns

Jones would be allowed to compete for the starting quarterback job with either team this summer. In Minnesota, he would face competition from 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy who missed his entire rookie season due to knee surgery. While McCarthy would be the preferred option, he’s never taken a regular-season snap in the Vikings’ offense and he still needs to put on more weight as part of his recovery.

Related: Biggest winners from NFL free agency Day 1

In Indianapolis, Jones would provide direct competition for Anthony Richardson to become the Colts starting quarterback in 2025. As with Minnesota, Indianapolis prefers its former first-round pick to win the job and would likely give him the edge if the competition is close. However, Colts general manager Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen are on the hot seat next season, so Jones might have a better opportunity with Indianapolis than Minnesota.

NFL rumors: Major red flag emerges about New York Giants, Tennessee Titans top draft target Cam Ward https://sportsnaut.com/nfl-rumors-red-flag-on-new-york-giants-draft-target-cam-ward/ Mon, 10 Mar 2025 17:34:27 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1279300 new york giants
Jasen Vinlove-Imagn Images

A new report offers up a very worrisome red flag about the player most linked to the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans in the 2025 NFL Draft, Cam Ward.

After horrendous showings in the 2024 season, the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants have a monumental opportunity in front of them next month. Both will have picks in the top three of the NFL Draft. The pair of teams also have a massive need at the quarterback spot.

  • Cam Ward stats (2024): 4,313 passing yards, 39 passing TDs, 7 interceptions, 172.2 passer rating, 204 rushing yards, 4 rushing TDs

Unfortunately for the pair of NFL franchises, this draft does not have a strong QB class. Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders are viewed as the best two signal caller prospects in 2024. Yet, while both have certain traits that will help bring them success as the next level, they also have some notable weaknesses.

Ward is viewed as the best available QB. And various NFL rumors have suggested New York or Tennessee are taking a very hard look at using their top pick on him. However, a recent report has offered up another warning about using a premium selection on a talented but flawed player like Cam Ward.

Over the weekend, ESPN NFL Draft guru Jordan Reid broke down the strengths and weaknesses of the top players in this year’s draft. And the opinion he received from one AFC scout should scare New York Giants and Tennessee Titans fans.

“He has times where he has to scratch his itch for reckless plays, and it leaves you asking, ‘What the heck was he thinking there?'” the scout said. “I like him and don’t know if that can be coached out of him.”

It is one thing to have flaws that can be worked on. It is something else to have an issue that some inside the league believe can’t be fixed. If Ward was a player that was selected in the third or fourth round, that problem would be worth the risk. However, a big miss on a first-round pick can cost executives their jobs.

It will be interesting to see if either the Giants or Titans see that some flaw and pass on Ward in Round 1.

A new report from a New York Giants insider reveals the team’s top priority in NFL free agency. And they may have a player from the New York Jets at the top of their wish list.

The next few weeks will be very important for New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen. After an impressive start for his regime three seasons ago, the franchise has quickly slid into being an afterthought following a pair of losing seasons. Including a 3-14 showing in 2024.

If he hopes to keep his job after this season, he will need to add a boatload of high-impact players this offseason. The NFL Draft in April will certainly offer the team several strong and affordable options. But they also must try and make some waves in free agency as well.

Late last week, ESPN Giants insider Jordan Raanan pointed to the team’s biggest focus on the open market this month, and revealed the players they could have high on their free agency wish list.

New York Giants to target New York Jets cornerback DJ Reed?

“The Giants need a CB1,” Raanan wrote. “They can’t go into next season with Deonte Banks as their top cornerback again, and who knows how the draft will play out. That makes it imperative that they sign a No. 1 cornerback in free agency.”

So who could the G-Men target to bolster the position for 2025? Well, the team claims there is early interest in going after New York Jets veteran DJ Reed, among several other players.

  • DJ Reed stats (2024): 14 games, 64 tackles, 1 sack, 11 passes defended

“Sources at the combine indicated the Giants are expected to shop near the top end of the cornerback market. D.J. Reed is expected to have a strong market and won’t come cheap, but there is interest,” Raanan revealed. “Charvarius Ward and Paulson Adebo are other options the Giants are expected to consider.

“They at least checked in on Minnesota’s Byron Murphy II as well. New York will also look into Jaire Alexander should he shake free from Green Bay and not get traded.”

Reed has been a rock solid player throughout his seven-year career. While he isn’t the ball hawk the team could use, he is a very competent pass defender and tackler. He would give them the sort of reliable CB the defense needs next season.

The New York Giants have been tied to several quarterbacks in NFL rumors this offseason, from a pursuit of Matthew Stafford to trading up for the first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft or signing a veteran in free agency. Now, two front-runners seem to be emerging in the Giants’ quarterback search.

Many around the league have believed for weeks that New York will aggressively pursue a trade with the Tennessee Titans for the No. 1 overall pick. It would put the Giants in a position to draft Cam Ward, who is widely viewed as the best quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Related: NFL free agency predictions 2025, includes New York Giants

However, the team is still expected to add a veteran signal-caller in NFL free agency. Giants coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are both keenly aware they are on the hot seat in 2025. Ward won’t put the team in a position to win a lot of games next season, prompting the need for a veteran starter. That is what has fueled the club’s aggressive approach this offseason, with two leading options emerging.

According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, the Giants are “likely” to end up with either Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson as their free-agent signing at quarterback. Whichever veteran is signed would enter training camp as the favorite to be the starting quarterback.

  • Russell Wilson stats (ESPN): 95.6 QB rating, 16-5 TD-INT ratio 2,482 passing yards, 7.4 yards per attempt, 63.7% completion rate, 155 rushing yards, 2 rushing touchdowns in 11 games

Related: New York Giants insider reveals likely cost of moving up for the first pick

Wilson and Rodgers both reportedly have some interest in signing with the Giants. With the Pittsburgh Steelers seemingly focused on Sam Darnold, Justin Fields and Rodgers, Wilson will likely need to find a new team. New York seems to be his top option, but he might have to wait to see where Rodgers lands.

  • Aaron Rodgers stats (ESPN): 3,897 passing yards, 28-11 TD-INT, 63% completion rate, 6.7 ypa, 90.5 QB rating, 40 sacks taken

As for Rodgers, he has a few potential suitors with the Giants, Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans among the clubs linked to him. The future Hall of Famer is only expected to sign a one-year contract, which would further point towards the Giants potentially taking a quarterback early in the 2025 NFL Draft.
