The Philadelphia Eagles will be carefully monitoring Saquon Barkley’s workload next season following a historic 2024 campaign where he became just the ninth running back in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards.

While delivering 2,005 yards on the ground, Barkley shouldered a career-high in rushing attempts (345) and total touches (378). After helping lead the Eagles to their second Super Bowl championship, general manager Howie Roseman rewarded Barkley with a groundbreaking extension just one year into his deal — making him the first running back in NFL history to command $20 million annually.

Will Shipley, entering his second year with the Eagles, is positioned for an expanded role in 2025. His rookie campaign yielded modest production with 82 rushing yards on 32 carries and 35 receiving yards on four receptions.

With reliable backup Kenneth Gainwell departing for the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year deal, the Eagles have now signed a running back who missed the entire 2024 season with a neck injury to round out their backfield rotation.

According to multiple reports, including NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Eagles have signed former Green Bay Packers running back A.J. Dillon to a one-year deal.

Dillon, the Packers’ second-round selection from the 2020 NFL Draft, missed the entire 2024 season with a neck injury but has received medical clearance from top specialists.

During his four-year stint in Green Bay (2020-2023), Dillon amassed 2,428 rushing yards on 597 carries with 16 touchdowns. He’s also proven himself as a capable receiver out of the backfield, recording 86 receptions for 763 yards and two additional scores.

Beyond his ball-carrying abilities, Dillon brings valuable pass-protection skills with his ability to pick up blitzing defenders.

Contract details remain undisclosed.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ top-ranked defense has already absorbed significant blows as free agency unfolds.

Fresh off their second Super Bowl triumph in franchise history, the Eagles have watched Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Darius Slay, and Isaiah Rodgers all head for new destinations. The front office did manage to retain All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun on a three-year, $51 million deal while also securing Saquon Barkley with a groundbreaking contract extension that makes him the league’s first $20 million-per-year running back.

Maintaining roster continuity was always going to be challenging with the Eagles currently holding just $27.5 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap.com.

Philadelphia simply couldn’t match the offers for Sweat and Williams, who parlayed their standout seasons into lucrative paydays from the Arizona Cardinals (four years, $76.4 million) and New England Patriots (four years, $104 million), respectively. Rodgers departed for the Minnesota Vikings on a two-year, $15 million contract, while six-time Pro Bowler Slay is joining the Pittsburgh Steelers after being designated as a post-June 1 release. The Gardner-Johnson trade to the Houston Texans came as a particular shock, considering how his ball-hawking abilities and intensity had elevated the defense.

General manager Howie Roseman is clearly looking toward the future, with defensive tackle Jalen Carter, edge rusher Nolan Smith, and center Cam Jurgens all approaching extension eligibility. The Eagles already have their offensive core of Barkley, Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith locked in through the 2028 season.

Now, a prominent NFL insider reveals he expects the Eagles to trim even more salary this offseason.

NFL insider: Expect Philadelphia Eagles to shed more talent, not add to payroll

Dallas Goedert, Philadelphia Eagles

During an interview with Philadelphia sports radio station 97.5 The Fanatic, ESPN’s Adam Schefter emphasized that the Eagles are more likely to reduce payroll than increase it.

“I think they are more likely to shed more salary than acquire more salary. That’s how I feel right now. So, you’re asking if there’s a trick up their sleeve? No, again, I think they are more likely to shed — shed — more salaries, make more moves the other way, more outgoing than incoming, I think,” Schefter stated.

The Eagles have committed substantial resources to their offensive stars, and there’s only so much money available. The team has drafted well recently, adding Carter and Smith along with defensive tackle Jordan Davis and cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

“The Eagles are paying their quarterback, and their running back, and their two wide receivers, and their offensive line, and they have Jalen Carter coming up and Nolan Smith coming up, and they just paid Zack Baun. Like, you can’t pay everybody, it just doesn’t work,” noted Schefter. “And so, would they have liked to keep some of these players? Of course, but it’s not practical. So, you have to start replenishing the cupboard with good, young players that you hope you hit on in the draft.”

With Philadelphia acquiring guard Kenyon Green, a former first-round draft pick still looking to fulfill his potential, from the Texans, it’s unlikely that Mekhi Becton will return despite revitalizing his career in 2024. Additionally, if the Eagles continue shedding salary, tight end Dallas Goedert could be on his way out. Goedert is due over $15 million in the final year of his contract and carries a potential $11.1 million dead cap hit.

Reports indicate the Eagles have made Goedert available in trade discussions. While he’s a premier tight end when healthy, his availability has been limited by injuries over the past few seasons.

The Philadelphia Eagles cruised their way to what looked like an easy Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs in February. Since then, several of their players have moved on, either due to an expiring contract, or trade, like C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

Naturally, the Eagles will have to do their best offsetting their offseason losses by finding capable replacements who can still help Philadelphia compete for another Super Bowl. Yet, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman’s job has just gotten easier.

Justin Simmons wants to reunite with his old coaches on Philadelphia Eagles

While they managed to re-sign Zack Baun to a contract extension, the Philadelphia Eagles have several other starters to replace on defense after Josh Sweat and Milton Williams departed. They’ve also moved on from James Bradberry and Darius Slay. While Howie Roseman is as good as anybody at being one step ahead of his team’s most urgent needs, the Eagles have some especially big holes to fill.

However, recently former two-time Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons went on the Talkin’ Ball podcast to discuss his interest in playing for the Eagles, where he’d get to reunite with two of his former defensive coaches from his days in Denver.

“There’s a lot of good things about Philly. Their offense is clearly one of the most talented in the league, that offensive line is unbelievable. But what the defense did this past season to go win that Super Bowl is crazy. You can tell the leadership there, top down, is by far one of the best in the league. To have an opportunity to go play in Philly, especially reuniting with Vic and CP, is high on the list.”

Justin Simmons on interest in playing for Philadelphia Eagles

With both his former Broncos defensive coordinator and his defensive backs coach now working in Philadelphia, Simmons would have a strong sense of familiarity with the Eagles, and they do have a need for another safety. On paper, this fit seems perfect, but will the two sides be able to come to an agreement?

NFL analyst blasts Cleveland Browns for making illogical trade to acquire QB Kenny Pickett from Philadelphia Eagles https://sportsnaut.com/cleveland-browns-news-nfl-analyst-blasts-kenny-pickett-trade-philadelphia-eagles/ Tue, 11 Mar 2025 20:59:35 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1279677 Kenny Pickett, Cleveland Browns
Eric Hartline-Imagn Images

The Cleveland Browns added a quarterback, but it’s left some questioning what the franchise is doing.

The Browns acquired Kenny Pickett, a former first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, from the Philadelphia Eagles for backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a 2025 fifth-round pick.

Pickett spent just one season in Philadelphia, appearing in five games and making one start when Jalen Hurts was sidelined with a concussion. He finished the season 25-for-42 for 291 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception.

Pickett will have a chance to start as Deshaun Watson will miss significant time after re-rupturing his Achilles tendon during the offseason.

One NFL analyst, though, called the Browns’ trade for Pickett illogical.

NFL analyst questions why Cleveland Browns traded draft pick to Philadelphia Eagles for Kenny Pickett

ESPN’s Seth Walder questioned why the Browns would expend a draft pick on Pickett as they are up against the cap wall and will pay him more ($2.6 million) than what the Eagles did in 2024 ($2 million).

“The Browns need a quarterback, don’t get me wrong. I just don’t believe that the team — which is highly leveraged against the cap and needs all the draft capital it can muster — ought to be burning picks on someone like Pickett. The former first-rounder — who ranked 20th in QBR his rookie season but dropped to 27th in 2023 before being discarded by the Steelers — has plenty of equivalents who could surely be acquired without giving up a fifth-round pick (and Thompson-Robinson),” Walder writes.

He continues, “Cleveland’s focus at quarterback surely is on the draft, and rightfully so. But the Browns probably could have done just as well, and maybe better (Kirk Cousins?!) without having to make this deal.”

According to OverTheCap.com, the Browns have just $10.8 million in cap space for 2025.

The Browns own the second overall pick in the upcoming draft and could select either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders as their quarterback of the future, if available.

Watson, who has become one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL since the Browns traded for him, still has two years left on his five-year, $230 million contract.

NFL analyst rips Philadelphia Eagles over ‘bizarre’ Saquon Barkley extension, warns it could ‘easily backfire’ https://sportsnaut.com/philadelphia-eagles-news-nfl-analyst-rips-saquon-barkley-extension/ Tue, 11 Mar 2025 20:11:05 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1279641 Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles

Following a historic season where he became the ninth running back ever to rush for 2,000 yards, the Philadelphia Eagles rewarded Saquon Barkley with a record-breaking extension.

Just one year into his three-year, $38 million deal, the Eagles gave Barkley a two-year, $41 million extension, making him the first $20 million-a-year running back in NFL history.

In his first season with the Eagles, Barkley rushed for 2,005 yards, scored 15 total touchdowns, averaged 125.3 rushing yards per game, became a first-team All-Pro for the first time in his career, captured the Offensive Player of the Year award, and led the Eagles to their second Super Bowl championship in franchise history.

However, one NFL analyst criticized the extension.

NFL analyst calls Philadelphia Eagles giving Saquon Barkley extension ‘bizarre’

ESPN’s Seth Walder took issue with the extension, calling it “bizarre.”

“It was an odd deal because it was so unnecessary. Barkley had two years left on his contract. And in his new deal, the Eagles handed him an additional $22 million in fully guaranteed money in exchange for… almost nothing. Those extra years come in his age-30 and age-31 seasons, extremely late in the career of a running back,” Walder writes.

He continues: “I understand Barkley might have needed placating with a little more money after his incredible 2024 performance, but the Eagles went above and beyond here, and it could pretty easily backfire if his play falls off.”

Barkley had the most rushing attempts (345) and touches (378) of his career in 2024. However, the Eagles plan to scale back Barkley’s usage as they will rely on Will Shipley more during games to give Barkley rest and not overuse him.

Deshaun Watson’s season ended just seven games into the 2024 NFL season after he tore his Achilles tendon. The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback recently re-tore his Achilles, which means he may not play a single down for the Cleveland Browns in 2025.

This makes the Browns one of the NFL’s most desperate teams when it comes to adding a quarterback or two this offseason. Yet, the Browns have already added one potential starter for 2025.

Only two quarterbacks were on the Cleveland Browns’ roster when NFL free agency began on Monday: Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Bailey Zappe. Now, one of them is gone.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Browns have agreed to trade DTR and a fifth-round pick (from DET) to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Kenny Pickett.

Pickett recently won a Super Bowl ring playing as the backup to Jalen Hurts, but he didn’t play much. Pickett appeared in five games and even won his lone start, completing 25-of-42 passes for 291 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He has a career win-loss record of 15-10 with a TD: INT ratio of 15 to 14.

Pickett, the 20th overall pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft, was traded to the Eagles last offseason along with a fourth-round pick in exchange for a third-round selection plus two seventh-round picks. He’ll still be just 27 when the 2025 season kicks off.

Right now, Pickett is the early favorite to begin the season as the Browns’ starting quarterback, but there’s a strong chance his status changes before kickoff. The Browns also have the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and could target a prospect at some point throughout the three-day selection event.

NFL Draft rumors: Philadelphia Eagles insider has Howie Roseman selecting All-American defensive lineman in first round https://sportsnaut.com/philadelphia-eagles-rumors-insider-predicts-nfl-draft-walter-nolen/ Sat, 08 Mar 2025 19:36:34 +0000 https://sportsnaut.com/?p=1278802 Walter Nolen, Philadelphia Eagles
Petre Thomas-Imagn Images

The Philadelphia Eagles have become one of the best franchises in the league as general manager Howie Roseman follows a simple principle — building the team from the lines out. And because of that approach, the Eagles boast one of the top offensive and defensive fronts in the NFL.

On the offensive side of the ball, four of their five starters are homegrown in Cam Jurgens, Landon Dickerson, Jordan Mailata, and Lane Johnson. They parted the seas for Saquon Barkley in his historic 2024 season where he became just the ninth running back of all-time to rush for 2,000 yards. All four linemen have been a Pro Bowler or a first- or second-team All-Pro selection.

On the other side of the ball, three out of the last four first-round picks have been defensive linemen in Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, and Nolan Smith. Carter has emerged as one of the best defensive tackles in the game, accumulating 4.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 16 quarterback hits, and four forced fumbles while earning second-team All-Pro honors. Smith, meanwhile, rebounded from a disappointing rookie season, tallying 6.5 sacks in 2024.

With free agents Josh Sweat (edge rusher) and Milton Williams (defensive tackle) likely to find paydays somewhere else, a team insider believes the Eagles will address the defensive line once again in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Team insider predicts Philadelphia Eagles will draft All-American

Walter Nolen, Philadelphia Eagles
Credit: Stephen Lew-Imagn Images

The Athletic’s Brooks Kubena predicts the Eagles will take Ole Miss All-American defensive tackle Walter Nolen with the 32nd overall pick.

“Nolen’s frame (6-3, 300 pounds) is similar to Williams’ (6-3, 290), and Nolen also has versatility in where he can position himself along the line of scrimmage. The majority of Nolen’s snaps in 2024 were within the interior (432) but he logged a significant sum at defensive end (130), according to Pro Football Focus,” Kubena reports. “After spending his first two seasons at Texas A&M, Nolen flourished into an All-American game-wrecker at Ole Miss, amassing 6.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries while being named a finalist for the Outland Trophy, awarded to the best interior lineman in college football.”

Over 35 college games, Nolen collected 11.5 sacks and 26 tackles for loss. At the NFL combine, Nolen ranked second among defensive tackles in production score, 18th in athleticism score, and second overall in total score, according to Next Gen Stats.

“Nolen has NFL-starting size but won’t blow you away with his physical traits. However, he gains quick advantages with his explosiveness into contact and ability to beat up blockers when singled up. He has the athletic talent to play into gaps but needs to play with better hands to keep himself clean at the point of attack. He wins as a rusher with his athleticism and play strength, and doesn’t need to be schemed for,” writes NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein. “The pass rush still requires refinement, but he already flashes quick-win moves that foreshadow good pressure and sack production as a pro. Nolen’s blend of explosiveness and playmaking talent create high upside as a three-down interior lineman.”

The Eagles currently have $22.6 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap.com, so it seems more likely they’ll look to upgrade the defensive line through the draft rather than making a big free-agent splash. They’ve already committed significant resources elsewhere, giving Barkley a record-breaking extension one year into his deal to make him the first $20 million-a-year running back, while bringing back All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun on a three-year, $51 million deal.

Under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Nolen could develop into a star. He also won’t be overworked, benefiting from Philadelphia’s proven defensive line rotation system — a perfect environment for a young talent to flourish while learning from established veterans.

The Philadelphia Eagles have had a busy beginning to the offseason after coming off their second Super Bowl championship in franchise history.

They rewarded Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley with a record-breaking contract extension just one year into his deal, making him the first $20 million-a-year running back following his historic 2024 campaign. The Birds also retained All-Pro Zack Baun on a three-year, $51 million deal after his breakthrough season as one of the league’s premier off-ball linebackers in Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme.

However, significant defensive holes still need addressing. Both edge rusher Josh Sweat and young defensive tackle Milton Williams are testing free agency and could price themselves out of Philadelphia’s budget. With just $21.9 million in cap space according to OverTheCap.com, tough decisions loom for Howie Roseman.

If Sweat bolts as expected, they’ll need to find his replacement on the edge. That’s why one NFL insider sees the Eagles targeting a young pass rusher with connections to their defensive coordinator.

NFL insider believes Philadelphia Eagles will sign 26-year-old edge rusher

Baron Browning, Philadelphia Eagles
Credit: Michael Chow/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The Athletic’s Mike Jones predicts the Birds will land 26-year-old edge rusher Baron Browning, who played under Fangio when he was the Denver Broncos head coach.

“The Eagles have some of the best interior linemen in the game, but with Josh Sweat expected to depart via free agency, they need to add more help off the edge. Howie Roseman could look to both the draft and free agency to meet needs here. Browning is a young player (26) who has a history with Vic Fangio, having played under the Eagles’ defensive coordinator when Fangio was head coach in Denver,” Jones noted.

Browning, a 2021 third-round draft pick of the Broncos, was traded to the Arizona Cardinals at last season’s deadline. In 13 games split between Denver and Arizona, he accumulated just two sacks, 21 total tackles, five tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits.

Those numbers might not jump off the page, but neither did Baun’s when he signed his one-year deal after coming over from the New Orleans Saints.

Over four NFL seasons, Browning has registered 11.5 sacks, 128 total tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 25 quarterback hits, one interception and two forced fumbles. While not elite production, his familiarity with Fangio could make him the latest reclamation project to thrive in Philadelphia’s defensive scheme.

The Philadelphia Eagles have several defensive holes to address after capturing their second Super Bowl championship in franchise history.

General manager Howie Roseman didn’t waste time making All-Pro Zack Baun one of the highest-paid linebackers in the league, signing him to a three-year, $51 million contract. Baun transformed his career in his first season with the Eagles, becoming one of the best off-ball linebackers under Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme.

However, they face more critical decisions as edge rusher Josh Sweat and young defensive tackle Milton Williams hit free agency. According to OverTheCap.com, the Birds currently have $21.9 million in cap space for 2025, making it challenging to retain both players who might command contracts beyond Philadelphia’s price range.

That’s why one team insider believes the Eagles should make a play to bring back a familiar face – a two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle who previously thrived in midnight green.

Insider: Philadelphia Eagles should consider bringing back Javon Hargrave

Javon Hargrave, Philadelphia Eagles
Credit: Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s E.J. Smith believes a reunion could be in play for Javon Hargrave and the Eagles. Hargrave spent three productive seasons in Philadelphia (2020-2022) where he emerged as a top-tier defensive tackle, accumulating 23 sacks, 161 total tackles, 24 tackles for loss, and 42 quarterback hits. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2021.

After the 2022 season, he signed a four-year, $84 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers but was released this offseason after playing just three games in 2024 due to a triceps injury.

“If the Eagles were interested in signing Hargrave in free agency for a second time, a reunion could make plenty of sense. He missed all but three games last year with a triceps injury, but he has proved throughout his career that he can be the type of versatile interior rusher to complement a star defensive tackle like Fletcher Cox or, in this scenario, Jalen Carter,” Smith reports. “In 2023, Hargrave had seven sacks and ranked eighth among all defensive tackles with 64 pressures. The season before, his final year with the Eagles, he had 11 sacks and 66 pressures.”

Smith continues: “Hargrave’s ability to play in multiple alignments, including at nose tackle, and to capitalize on the attention players like Cox and Carter draw would make him a seamless replacement for Milton Williams, assuming Williams gets a big-money deal and Hargrave’s market stalls by comparison.”

If Williams does command a contract beyond Philadelphia’s budget, bringing back Hargrave looks like a savvy Roseman move. The veteran defender would return to a team where he previously flourished and get another crack at championship contention with an Eagles team that’s reloaded for another Super Bowl push.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles have already been active ahead of NFL free agency. All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun was re-signed to a lucrative deal, while cornerbacks Darius Slay and James Bradberry were released. Now, the Eagles roster could be forced to take another hit this offseason.

Re-signing Baun was a top priority for Philadelphia. It keeps the standout off-ball linebacker as an integral part of Vic Fangio’s defense, and it also takes off the board one of the top NFL free agents. With the club also attempting to re-sign defensive tackle Milton Williams, edge rusher Josh Sweat and guard Mekhi Becton, other cap casualties could be looming.

On a recent episode of unCovering the Birds with Jeff McLane, the Eagles insider shared a conversation he had with an agent who believes tight end Dallas Goedert will be traded this offseason.

“One of those tips came via an agent I had known for years, who I ran into at the JW Marriott. He was convinced the Eagles wouldn’t be bringing back tight end Dallas Goedert, and offered information that suggested as much. Goedert has been one of the best at his position for the last several years. But staying healthy has been an issue. He’s under contract for the 2025 season. But he doesn’t have any remaining guaranteed money remaining on his contract and he just turned 30”

Philadelphia Eagles beat writer Jeff McLane on tight end Dallas Goedert

McLane also shared that he reached out to sources around the league who “verified” that it’s not a lock for Goedert to be on the Eagles roster next season. However, a potential move is complicated because the team doesn’t have a clear replacement at tight end.

  • Dallas Goedert stats (ESPN): 42 receptions, 496 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns in 10 games

Fortunately for Philadelphia, the 2025 NFL Draft class is viewed as being uniquely deep at tight end this offseason. The Eagles could try to take advantage of potential contenders who want a proven pass-catcher at tight end rather than betting on a rookie at a position that typically doesn’t deliver standouts immediately.

Goedert hasn’t played in 15-plus games since the 2021 season and he’s failed to eclipse 600 receiving yards or reach 4 touchdowns in each of his last two seasons. Entering the last year of his deal, the Eagles would free up $6.789 million in cap space if Goedert is designated as a post-June 1 trade.
